Conformal Artificial Pinning Array for Enhanced Pinning of Superconducting Vortices


Superconductors are limited in their current carrying capacity because slight imperfections in the material create circulating current or vortices that will eventually cascade and cause catastrophic failure. Holes can formed in the superconductor to trap vortices. Researchers at Notre Dame have discovered that by matching a pattern of holes with magnetic flux, we can double the current carrying capacity of superconductors. With this invention, half as much material can be used to move the same current as in present designs.
