Novel Technique for Client-Side Passive Detection of WiFi Access Point Load (c) 2016

Description:

Choosing a wireless network based solely on signal strength can lead to the selection of a busy network and slow response.  Typically, a user must join and experience poor performance or interrogate the access point which can take considerable amounts of time and energy.  With technology developed at the University of Notre Dame, clients need no longer join the wireless network but rather can carefully observe the WiFi environment around them using mechanisms already present on mobile devices. Better yet, this new technology requires zero overhead, effectively leveraging behaviors that the mobile phone is already doing but interpreting such information effectively.  The end result is that mobile clients can rank and choose the best access point without requiring any intervention or interactions with nearby access points offering a solution that can work any place and anywhere for an improved wireless experience.
